The skin , from Latin pellis, is designated as the organ larger in animals and in humans. It is a tegument that, in the case of organisms with vertebrae, is composed of an outer layer (called epidermis ) and from another interior (which is called dermis ).

In humans, the skin weighs about five kilograms and occupies about two square meters. Its thickness between half a millimeter and four millimeters (depending on the region of the body ) It allows protect the body from external aggressions , help preserve the integrity of its structures and function as a means of communication with the outside.

The epidermis It is the most superficial layer of the skin, formed by components such as keratin and melanin (the pigment that gives the skin color). Within the epidermis it is possible to distinguish between several strata, such as the germinative, the spiny, the granular, the lucid, the cornea and the disjunct.

The dermis It is the layer of skin that is under the epidermis. With a thickness up to thirty times greater than the epidermis, it is a second defensive line against trauma. The structure of the dermis allows to distinguish between two layers: the superior or papillary dermis, and the deep or reticular dermis.

The hypodermis Finally, it is the subcutaneous stratum that appears after the dermis.

The skin determines the structure of the skin annexes like nails, certain glands and hair. It should be noted, on the other hand, that diseases of the skin are known as dermatitis and are studied by the dermatology .

In addition to everything we have stated, we cannot ignore the presentation of a series of expressions or terms that are based on the use of the skin concept we are analyzing. Thus, for example, we find the so-called lambskin with which it becomes clear that a specific person has a totally caring and harmless appearance although in reality it hides negative objectives or falsehood.

In the same way is also known as goosebumps. With this expression, what is wanted is to state that someone, out of fear or cold, reacts and has the skin, and more specifically the epidermis, similar to that of said animal.

A third term or expression that we have to leave here patent is red skin. With it, an important group of people is defined. More precisely with the use of that reference is made to the Indians who were indigenous to the northern United States.

Stripping the skin is another phrase widely used by everyone. It is used to make it clear that a number of people are criticizing hard and hard against another. Thus, an example could be the following: "Pedro and Felix stripped Manuel's skin".

Orange peel, which is the appearance that cellulite-like skin acquires, or leaving the skin, which means that someone works and tries their best in a task, are two of the most used expressions taking the term as reference skin.
