Point , from Latin punctum, is a circular signal , usually of small dimensions, which is noticeable in a surface by contrast of color or relief. For example: "What is that red dot in the middle of the wall?", “When I went to look for the photograph, I realized that it was full of small blue dots”.
For the orthography , one point is the note that is written about the i and the j , and the sign which indicates the end of the grammatical and logical sense of a sentence . That same sign is also used after abbreviations (Mr. , Dr. ).
Starting from that meaning of the sign with which a sentence concludes, we must emphasize that there are three differentiated classes: period and followed, that a sentence ends but not the paragraph; point and apart, that unlike the previous one concludes a paragraph; and end point, which is the one that is placed as the last element of a text.
All this without forgetting that there are two points, which are placed vertically one above and the other and that function as a punctuation mark. Where appropriate, they are used to enter a textual quotation, to start an enumeration, to give way to a numbered list or to establish the next presence of an explanation.
In the same way, within what would be the language we should also refer to those known as ellipses. These are composed of three horizontally established points one behind the other that are placed at the end of a sentence to make it clear that it could have a continuation, to signal an interruption of a comment or to suspend a sentence, among other functions .
In certain games , the points are the scoring units that allow to take the marker and define who is the winner: "Los Angeles Lakers won by fifteen points difference to Chicago Bulls", “Roger Federer has point to match with his serve”.
In the case, for example of basketball there are several shots that, if successful, are compensated with a different number of points. Players who hit and get the ball into the basket on free throws will get a point. Those who do the same within the area that is restricted by the line of three, will get two points. And finally, those who manage to score beyond the triple line will add three points to their score.
In a similar sense, the points are used to grade exams or anything that can be judged through a certain scale : “I got eight points out of ten on my math test”, “Argentine critics put only three points on this movie”, "The Chilean striker had a qualified performance with ten points by most local media".
A point can also be a site or place (“We agreed that the meeting point would be the confectionery that is located in front of the square”), a favorable or timely occasion (“We have reached the point where everything is profit for us”) or each of the issues in question a speech, conference or similar ("We will move on to the third point, dedicated to analyzing the technical characteristics of this new machine").
