Greek is the language in which the etymological origin of the word paraphilia originates. Specifically, it is formed by the union of for, which means "next to", and filein, which could be translated as a synonym for the verb "to love."
According to the dictionary definition of the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) , a paraphilia is a sexual diversion . It is an intimate behavior where pleasure is obtained through a different activity to sexual intercourse itself.
Paraphilias are considered harmless , although there are exceptions. Certain paraphilias can generate physical and / or psychological damage in any of the participants of the sexual act, as it happens with the pedophilia .
Specifically, it is established that a person enjoys carrying out a paraphilia because that means enjoying one or both of the following elements:
Risk. The risk that comes with carrying out a sexual practice classified as paraphilia means that the person in question enjoys it and has much greater excitement.
Will to power. Through one of these practices, the person who carries it out enjoys a sense of power over the person with whom he or she performs it, feels above it and has the capacity to do what he wants.
It should be noted that the parameter to consider whether a sexual behavior is paraphilic varies throughout history and according to the region. In this way, practices that were considered paraffilic a few decades ago, today are accepted as normal and, therefore, are not taken as deviations. That is the case of the masturbation , the fellatio or the cunnilingus , for example.
Importantly, experts have not found psychological disorders or organic changes that provide an explanation about the origin of a paraffilic practice. These deviations, however, can be treated by psychoanalytic therapy.
Among the most common paraphilias, the following can be mentioned altocalcifilia (excitement for footwear that has high heels), the suffocation (which involves causing an erotic strangulation), the bestialism (where the sexual relationship contemplates the participation of an animal), the coprolalia (sexual stimulation from the use of profanity), the fetishism (desire through the use of objects or body parts in sexual intercourse), the masochism (pleasure linked to physical suffering and humiliation), the pedophilia (attraction for children), the podophilia (foot excitement) and the sadism (pleasure in generating physical pain to the other).
However, they are not the only paraphilias that are currently known. Thus, among others of the best known are the following:
Necrophilia, which consists in obtaining pleasure through sexual practice with corpses.
Exhibitionism, which is the practice of those people who get pleasure deliberately and publicly showing their genitals.
Vouyerismo, which is defined as the attainment of sexual pleasure through the vision of the genitals or the sexual acts performed by other people.
Froteurismo. In this specific case, the satisfaction of those who have this aforementioned paraphilia comes by rubbing their genitals with the body of another person.
